Wahl’s Hybrid Precast Thimble Exhibits Minimal Wear After Two Years in Stage IV Cyclone.

Wahl Refractory Solutions’ Hybrid Precast Thimbles have demonstrated superior performance for use in multi-stage preheaters. The Thimble’s wear-resistant qualities were made evident during an inspection of an installation after two years in service. Figure 1 shows a view of the thimble from below.

Wahl Hybrid Precast Thimbles outperform other segmented castings as its mechanical pin attachment design prevents unraveling.  Furthermore, the refractory cladding has proven to be more resistant to heat and chemical attack. The Thimble plates assemble quickly and easily.

The tangential impact area that faces an inlet duct shows a clear delineation where the buildup (left of Figure 3) has been eroded away by the sand-blasting action of the dust-laded gases hitting the side of the Thimble (right of Figure 3). It is here where the Thimble segments were exposed to the maximum level of abrasion, yet all visible Thimble segments exhibit minimal wear and the refractory linings were left intact.
